The Environmental Protection Department today announced the withdrawal of the exhaust emission type approval of a Volkswagen diesel commercial vehicle.
It involves the Caddy model, as its EA 189 engine has been installed with "defeat devices". These enable the vehicles to comply with the specified emission standards while testing in a laboratory but their on-road emissions exceed emission standards.
Transport Department records show 269 Caddy vehicles have been registered in Hong Kong since 2011.
No new registrations of this model will be allowed after the withdrawal and the model will be removed from the department’s list of environment-friendly commercial vehicles eligible for first registration tax concession.
VW Hong Kong has been asked to take remedial actions on its Caddy diesel vehicles that have already been sold in Hong Kong, such as formulating a rectification plan, setting up a hotline to answer enquiries and informing affected customers.
The company has undertaken to take remedial actions expeditiously.
