The Environment Bureau today unveiled Hong Kong's first energy saving blueprint, which will cut "energy intensity" - the amount of energy for every unit of wealth created - by 40% by 2025.
Speaking at a press conference, Secretary for the Environment KS Wong said: "More than half of our total annual energy use is in the form of electricity consumption, with buildings accounting for about 90% of the city's electricity use. Promoting green buildings and enhancing building energy saving has been one of our priority tasks.
"To achieve our new target, we in the community must take collective actions to change our behaviour and to invest in more energy efficient products, technologies and practices."
The Government will take the lead in promoting green building development by requiring all major new government buildings to achieve at least BEAM Plus Gold standard. It will also strive to reduce electricity consumption in Government buildings by 5% by 2020, and explore further reductions in 2019/20.
Mr Wong said he will work to accelerate green building adoption in the private sector, and the Government will regularly expand or tighten the statutory energy efficiency requirements for buildings and products, and will boost education on energy saving.
The Government will support energy saving drives in the community, and develop sector-specific campaigns to promote energy saving.
