Gov’t listening to people’s views: CS
January 01, 2013
Chief Secretary Carrie Lam says the Government will listen to people’s views carefully as always, and will pay special attention to people's sentiments and views in the coming year.
Mrs Lam told reporters today that Hong Kong is a free society, that the Government respects freedom of speech, and that it attaches great importance to giving people adequate opportunities to express their views.
She said there were no problems with the procession joined by various organisations today, and said the Police have taken measures to facilitate them. At the same time, she expressed people's hope that Hong Kong can be well-ordered, and that all processions can be held peacefully and rationally.
When asked about an organisation's conflict with reporters during the procession, she said the Government would not tolerate any illegal behaviour, and the Police would take appropriate action. It is the reporters’ job to report, and this should be respected, she said.
In response to today’s procession, the Government reiterated that it fully respects people's rights to take part in processions and enjoy their freedom of expression, and said it would listen to their views in a humble manner.
The Chief Executive is currently focusing on the preparation of his first Policy Address, and is working on various areas of concern including the economy, addressing deep-rooted problems in a pragmatic manner, improving people's livelihoods and promoting harmony and stability in society.
